Student-Athlete Dual Career

The University of Florence recognizes the importance of physical and mental well-being and supports students engaged in competitive sports.

The Dual Career Student-Athlete programme is designed for students enrolled in degree programmes at the University who take part in sports competitions at national and international level.

The programme allows you to balance your sporting commitments with your academic path through flexible measures and personalized support.


Who it is for

To apply for the dual career, you must be regularly enrolled within the standard duration of your degree programme (or at most in the following year) and meet the general requirements:

  • be registered with a sports club engaged in competitive sport and affiliated with National Sports Federations (FSN) or Associated Sports Disciplines officially recognized by CONI (DSA) or by CIP;
  • have no final criminal convictions for non-negligent offences resulting in custodial sentences exceeding one year or in penalties involving disqualification from public office for more than one year;
  • have not received, in the past ten years (unless rehabilitated), definitive sports disqualifications or bans totaling more than one year from National Sports Federations, Associated Sports Disciplines, sports promotion bodies, CONI, CIP, or internationally recognized sports organizations;
  • have not been sanctioned for violations of the CONI or CIP Anti-Doping Regulations or the provisions of the WADA World Anti-Doping Code.

and meet at least one of the specific requirements listed in this document.


What benefits it offers

As a student-athlete, you can benefit from:

  • the possibility to take exams on alternative dates in case of overlap with official sports commitments, subject to agreement with the lecturer and the relevant offices, when the exam session coincides with or falls within five days before or after a sports event certified by your Federation or by CONI or CIP;
  • dedicated office hours;
  • non-counting of absences for compulsory attendance in the case of documented competitions;
  • dedicated academic tutoring to address any issues related to your academic career, such as attendance, study and exam support, access to learning materials, teaching services, and internships;
  • mention of the dual career in the Diploma Supplement documenting your academic path as a student-athlete;
  • possible recognition of ECTS credits for elective activities consistent with your study programme, in the case of significant sporting achievements (e.g. medals or awards in World or European Championships, Olympic or Paralympic Games, in disciplines recognized by CONI or CIP).

How to access

To apply, you must send your application to unifiinclude.sport@unifi.it.

Required documentation:

  • application form;
  • certificate of registration with a sports club affiliated with FSN/DSA/CONI/CIP confirming the requirement indicated in the application form.

The Dual Career Student-Athlete Committee evaluates applications and publishes the list of eligible candidates.

Student-athlete commitments

Participation in the dual career programme also involves certain commitments, including:

  • promptly informing your lecturer and academic tutor of your participation in competitions or major events;
  • granting the University, free of charge, the right to take video recordings and/or photographs of you, to be used for the promotion of the dual career programme;
  • participating in national and international university competitions wearing clothing and/or accessories displaying the University logo, where compatible with your sporting commitments;
  • ensuring participation in at least two University-organized events, according to arrangements that will be defined.
