The Ombudsman for Rights is an independent and autonomous body, provided for by the University Statute (Art. 23), with the task of safeguarding the rights and interests of the university community.
The Ombudsman intervenes in cases where potential violations of protected rights or interests are reported, in relation to issues concerning the application of internal regulations, administrative or teaching dysfunctions, as well as breaches of the principles of impartiality, transparency, and fairness.
The Ombudsman acts only after the matter has been previously submitted, without resolution, to the relevant offices or bodies (e.g. administrative offices, Programme Directors, Vice-Rectors or Delegates) and does not replace them. The Ombudsman is not a Public Relations Office (PRO) or a Complaints Office.
Following the review, the Ombudsman issues a reasoned opinion, which is communicated to the Rector and to the parties concerned. Extracts of the opinions are published anonymously.
The Ombudsman for Rights for the four-year term 2025–2029 is Dr Carmelo Cantone.
Any member of the university community (academic staff, researchers, students, technical and administrative staff) may contact the Ombudsman to request protection in the cases provided for.
The service is free of charge and ensures the utmost confidentiality, with full respect for the individual and the situation described.
